You're in the middle of a video call, your screen freezes, and the person on the other end sounds like a robot. Or maybe Netflix keeps buffering at the worst possible moment. Or your Wi-Fi just flat-out drops every hour like clockwork.
Slow or unreliable Wi-Fi is one of the most frustrating home tech problems — partly because it feels invisible. You can't see the signal, and the issues seem random. But most home network problems have clear causes. Here are seven real fixes that make a genuine difference.
1. Restart Your Router — But Do It Right
Yes, this is the cliché first step. But there's a right way to do it. Don't just unplug and replug immediately — that doesn't give the hardware time to reset properly. Unplug your modem and your router, wait a full 60 seconds, then plug the modem back in first. Wait for it to fully connect (30–60 seconds), then plug in the router.
This clears memory leaks and stale connections that accumulate over days or weeks of continuous use. If you haven't rebooted in months, you might be surprised how much faster things feel afterward.
2. Check Where Your Router Is Sitting
Router placement is a bigger deal than most people realize. Wi-Fi signals radiate outward in all directions, so a router stuffed in a corner or locked inside a cabinet is working at a serious disadvantage.
Ideal placement: a central location in your home, elevated (like a shelf or table), away from walls, metal objects, and appliances — especially microwaves, which operate on the same 2.4 GHz frequency. If your router is in a closet or on the floor, just moving it can noticeably improve speeds across the house.
3. Switch to the 5 GHz Band
Most modern routers broadcast two frequencies: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band has longer range but slower speeds and more interference from neighboring networks. The 5 GHz band is faster but doesn't travel as far through walls.
If you're sitting close to your router and still seeing a slow connection, check whether your device is connected to the 5 GHz network. Many routers give both bands the same name, so your device might be clinging to the slower 2.4 GHz signal out of habit.
4. Find What's Eating Your Bandwidth
A Wi-Fi slowdown is sometimes less about your connection and more about what's on it. Security cameras, smart TVs auto-downloading updates, game consoles syncing in the background — these all compete for bandwidth.

Use a free tool like Wi-Fi Analyzer (Android) or iStumbler (Mac) to see which channels nearby networks are using, then manually set your router to a less congested one. Channels 1, 6, and 11 are the non-overlapping options for 2.4 GHz.
7. Consider Whether Your Equipment Is Just Old
Routers have a lifespan. If yours is more than 5–6 years old, it may simply not handle the number of devices or the speeds your internet plan provides. Older routers also lack features like beamforming and MU-MIMO that make modern Wi-Fi much more efficient.
