Alexa Not Responding? How to Fix It

Here's how to diagnose and fix it fast." date: "2026-06-09" keywords: ["alexa not responding", "alexa not working", "echo not responding", "fix alexa", "alexa wont respond", "echo dot not responding"]

Your Echo is sitting on the counter, the light ring isn't coming on, and Alexa just... isn't there. Could be a dozen things. Here's how to figure out which one.

Check the Obvious First

Before troubleshooting anything, make sure the device is plugged in and the power adapter is fully seated. Echo devices don't have a battery. If the light ring isn't showing anything at all, the problem is power.

Also check the microphone mute button. It's the button with the microphone icon on top of the device. When the mute is on, the ring turns solid red. Alexa will not respond to voice commands when mute is on. Press the button once to turn it off.

Wi-Fi Connection Problems

If the light ring is orange, Alexa can't connect to the internet. Most Alexa issues come down to this.

Start by unplugging the Echo for 30 seconds and plugging it back in. Then unplug your router and modem, wait 30 seconds, and plug them back in. Wait a minute for everything to reconnect, then try again.

If that doesn't work, open the Alexa app on your phone. Go to Devices, find your Echo, and check the Wi-Fi status. If it shows disconnected, tap "Change" next to the Wi-Fi network and reconnect it manually.

One thing to check: if you recently changed your Wi-Fi password or got a new router, your Echo doesn't know the new credentials. You'll need to reconnect it to the new network in the Alexa app.

Also worth knowing: Echo devices connect to 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, but some older models only support 2.4 GHz. If your router broadcasts them as separate networks, try connecting to the 2.4 GHz one.

Alexa Responds but Does the Wrong Thing

If Alexa hears you but keeps misunderstanding, a few things can cause this.

Placement matters. An Echo next to a TV, in a cabinet, or facing a wall will struggle to hear clearly. Move it to an open spot, away from speakers and other noise sources.

Distance matters too. The wake word detection on Echo devices works best within 20 to 30 feet in a quiet room, but background noise cuts that range significantly. In a loud kitchen or living room, being closer helps.

If Alexa is responding to someone else's TV or music, you can change the wake word from "Alexa" to "Echo," "Amazon," or "Ziggy" in the Alexa app under Device Settings.

Alexa Hears You but Smart Home Devices Don't Respond

If Alexa says "okay" but your lights don't turn on or your thermostat doesn't change, the problem isn't with Alexa. It's with the connection between Alexa and the device.

Open the Alexa app, go to the device that isn't working, and check if it shows as "Unresponsive." If it does, the device is offline. Unplug it, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for it to reconnect to Wi-Fi.

If the device shows as online but still won't respond to Alexa commands, try disabling and re-enabling the skill for that device brand (under More > Skills & Games in the Alexa app), then rediscover devices.

Factory Reset as a Last Resort

If nothing above fixes it, a factory reset clears any software issues and starts fresh. You will have to set the device up again, but it takes about five minutes.

For most Echo devices: hold the Action button (the dot button) for 25 seconds until the light ring turns orange, then goes off. The device will restart and enter setup mode.

For Echo Dot (3rd gen and later): hold the Action button for 25 seconds.

After the reset, open the Alexa app and set it up like new.

If you've gone through all of this and the device still won't work, the hardware may be the issue. A tech can diagnose it in person and tell you whether it's worth repairing or time to replace. SageTech sends someone to your home, usually within the hour.
