Most home networks are set up once and never touched again. Default passwords, outdated firmware, and open guest networks. If that sounds familiar, here are ten things you can do to actually secure your network.
1. Change Your Router's Admin Password
Your router has two passwords: the Wi-Fi password and the admin password used to log into the router's settings page. The admin password almost always ships as something like "admin" or "password."
Log into your router (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in a browser), find Security or Administration settings, and change the admin password to something strong and unique. If you've never done this, do it first.
2. Use WPA3 Encryption
WPA3 is the current standard for Wi-Fi security. WPA2 is acceptable, but WPA and WEP are dangerously outdated.
In your router settings, look for Wireless Security or Wi-Fi Security. Set it to WPA3 if available, or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode if you have older devices. Avoid WEP entirely.
3. Create a Strong Wi-Fi Password
Your Wi-Fi password should be at least 12 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. "family" or "123456789" are not strong passwords.
A phrase works well: something like "BlueDog!Runs@Fast" is long, memorable, and hard to crack.
4. Set Up a Guest Network
Most modern routers let you create a separate guest network. Visitors, smart home devices, and anything you don't fully trust should connect to the guest network, not your main network.
The guest network is isolated from your main network, so a compromised smart plug can't access your laptop.
5. Keep Router Firmware Updated
Router manufacturers regularly release firmware updates that patch security vulnerabilities. Log into your router settings and check for firmware updates. Some routers update automatically. Enable that if it's available.
6. Disable WPS
Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) was designed to make connecting new devices easier. It's also a known security vulnerability. An attacker nearby can exploit WPS to crack your network without knowing your password.
Find the WPS setting in your router and disable it. You'll have to enter your Wi-Fi password manually when adding new devices, which is a small price to pay.
7. Hide Your Network Name (SSID)
When you hide your SSID, your network name won't show up in the list of available networks on nearby devices. It won't stop a determined attacker, but it eliminates casual attempts.
Go to your router's wireless settings and disable "Broadcast SSID" or "SSID Visibility."
8. Check What Devices Are Connected
Log into your router and find the connected devices list, sometimes called "DHCP clients" or "Device list." You should recognize every device on there.
If you see something unfamiliar, change your Wi-Fi password immediately. All legitimate devices will reconnect once you update them.
9. Consider a VPN on Your Router
A VPN encrypts all traffic leaving your network before it reaches the internet. Some routers support router-level VPN, which means every device on your network is protected without installing anything on each device.
Services like ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Mullvad offer router-compatible plans. The setup is more technical than a device app, but it provides network-wide coverage.
10. Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Your Router Account
Some router manufacturers now offer account-based management with two-factor authentication. If your router's app or web portal offers 2FA, enable it. This prevents someone from accessing your router's settings even if they know your admin password.
A quick note on smart home devices: every device you add to your network is a potential entry point. Keep them on the guest network, update their firmware when updates are available, and remove anything you're no longer using.
