A laptop that lasts two hours instead of eight usually doesn't need a new battery. Most battery drain problems are caused by settings, background apps, or browser tabs. Start with the easy fixes.

Check Your Screen Brightness

Screen brightness is the single biggest driver of battery drain. A laptop running at 100% brightness uses significantly more power than one at 50%.

Most laptops have function keys (Fn + brightness up/down) or a slider in the system tray. Drop it to somewhere around 50-60% when you're working indoors. You probably won't notice the difference visually.

Find What's Using Your Battery

On Windows: Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and click the CPU column to sort by usage. Anything consistently above 10-15% when you're just browsing is a problem.

Also check: Settings then System then Battery then Battery usage. This shows which apps have used the most battery in the past 24 hours.

On Mac: Click the battery icon in the menu bar. It shows apps using significant energy right now. You can also open Activity Monitor and look at the Energy tab.

Change Your Power Plan (Windows)

Windows has power plans that control how hard the processor works.

Go to Settings then System then Power and sleep then Additional power settings. You'll see Balanced, Power Saver, and possibly High Performance. Switch to Power Saver or Balanced if you're on battery. High Performance keeps the processor running at full speed even when it doesn't need to.

Close Browser Tabs You're Not Using

A browser with 30 open tabs can drain battery almost as fast as a video game. Each tab stays partially active, running scripts and refreshing content.

Close anything you're not actively reading. If you need to keep something for later, bookmark it or use a tab manager extension.

Chrome and Edge are heavier on battery than Firefox or Safari. On Mac especially, Safari uses noticeably less power than Chrome for the same tasks.

Check Your Battery Health

Batteries degrade over time. After 2-3 years, a battery that originally held 4 hours of charge might now hold 2 hours even when fully charged.

On Windows: Open Command Prompt as administrator and type:

powercfg /batteryreport

This generates an HTML report saved to your user folder. Open it and look at Design Capacity vs. Full Charge Capacity. If full charge capacity is 60% or less of design capacity, the battery is worn.

On Mac: Hold Option and click the battery icon in the menu bar. It'll say "Normal," "Replace Soon," "Replace Now," or "Service Battery." Anything other than Normal means the battery is degraded.

You can also go to Apple menu then About This Mac then System Report then Power and look at Cycle Count. Over 1,000 cycles on most MacBooks means the battery has had a full life.

Disable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi When Not Needed

If you're working offline, turn off Wi-Fi. If you're not using wireless peripherals, turn off Bluetooth. Both use power even when not actively transferring data.

On Windows: Action Center (notification icon, bottom right) lets you toggle both quickly. On Mac: menu bar icons.

When You Actually Need a New Battery

If your laptop is 3+ years old, battery health is below 60%, and none of the above makes a meaningful difference, replacement makes sense. Battery replacements typically cost $80-150 at a repair shop and add another 2-3 years of useful life to the machine.

It's almost always cheaper than buying a new laptop.
