Why Does My Phone Keep Disconnecting from Wi-Fi?

Your phone drops Wi-Fi every hour, reconnects on its own, and you've started to notice it happens most in the same rooms.

It's annoying. And it's usually fixable without buying anything.

Here's what's actually happening and how to track down the cause.

It Might Not Be Your Phone

Before you dig into settings, run this test. Take a different device, a laptop or tablet, and sit in the same spot where your phone disconnects. If that device drops too, the issue is your router or your network, not your phone.

If it's only your phone disconnecting while everything else stays connected, then it's something specific to that device.

The Router Is Kicking It Off

Most routers have a power management or connection timeout setting that quietly drops devices it thinks are idle. Some older or cheaper routers also have a client limit. Once you hit a certain number of connected devices, the router starts dropping older ones to make room.

Log into your router's admin panel (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in your browser) and look for settings around DHCP lease time or idle timeouts. If your lease time is set to something short, like 1 hour, devices will briefly drop when renewing. Extend it to 24 hours or more.

Your Phone Is Trying to Save Battery

Both Android and iOS have settings that reduce Wi-Fi activity when your screen is off or when battery gets low. On Android, look in Wi-Fi advanced settings for "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep." On iPhone, "Low Power Mode" can reduce Wi-Fi performance when it kicks in.

On Android, also check for "Wi-Fi+" or "Smart Network Switch." These are designed to switch you from Wi-Fi to cellular when your signal looks weak, but they often trigger when the Wi-Fi is perfectly fine. Turn it off.

Forget the Network and Start Over

Sometimes a disconnection loop gets fixed by something simple: forgetting the network and reconnecting from scratch. On iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the (i) next to the network name, and hit "Forget This Network." Then reconnect and enter the password again. On Android, it's Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi, then long press the network and forget it.

This clears stored credentials and any corrupted connection state. It fixes the problem more often than you'd expect.

The 2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz Switching Problem

Most modern routers broadcast two bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Your phone switches between them automatically, picking whichever looks stronger. Sometimes this auto-switching goes wrong, and your phone tries to hold onto the 5 GHz band while you're too far from the router.

If your router lets you split the bands into two separate networks, something like "Home" and "Home_5G," try connecting specifically to the 2.4 GHz network. It has better range, and the stability trade-off is worth it in most homes.

Too Many Devices on One Router

If your household runs 20 or more devices at once and your router is a few years old, the router may be dropping connections under load. Check the connected device count in your router's admin panel. If you're near its limit, a mesh Wi-Fi system handles device density much better than a single router can.

When to Get Help

If you've worked through everything here and the drops keep happening, the problem usually comes down to a failing router or interference from nearby networks. Both are faster to diagnose with someone who can see your actual setup.
