Can the Previous Owner Still See My Ring Camera?

You just moved into your new house. The Ring doorbell is mounted by the front door, looking great. You figure you'll set it up later. But here's the thing: that camera might already be active, sending a live feed to someone else's phone.

It sounds paranoid. It's not. Ring cameras, Nest cameras, and most smart home security devices stay linked to their original owner's account until someone manually removes them. Moving trucks and a deed transfer don't wipe that connection. Nothing automatic does.

Here's exactly what happens and what to do about it.

Why the old owner can still see your cameras

Smart cameras link to an account, not an address. When you buy a house with a Ring doorbell already installed, that device is still registered to whoever bought it. They get motion alerts. They can view live footage. They can talk through the two-way audio. All of this continues until the device is factory reset and removed from their account.

Ring requires the original owner to either remove the device from their account or do a full reset before it can be claimed by someone new. If they didn't do that before closing, you have a camera on your property that you don't control.

This isn't a Ring-specific problem. Blink, Arlo, Wyze, Nest, Eufy. They all work the same way. The account owns the device, not the address.

How to tell if a camera is still linked to someone else

If you try to add a Ring camera to your Ring app and it tells you the device is "already registered to another account," that's your answer. The previous owner didn't release it.

Some cameras show no obvious sign. They just work, or they don't respond to your setup attempts at all. If a camera is in your home and you can't add it through the normal setup flow, there's a good chance it's still tied to someone else.

How to actually fix it

For Ring, you have two options.

First, ask the seller. Before or at closing, request they remove all Ring devices from their account. This is the cleanest path. If they're cooperative, it takes them two minutes in the app: go to Device, then Account, then Remove Device.

Second, factory reset the device yourself. For most Ring doorbells, hold the orange setup button on the back for 20 seconds. The device will factory reset and can then be claimed through your account. The previous owner loses access the moment you do this.

For other brands: Blink and Wyze have similar reset buttons or processes in their apps. Nest cameras can be reset by holding the reset button for five seconds. Check the manual for your specific model.

After the reset, download the app, add the device to your account, and go through setup as if it's brand new. That's it.

One thing people miss

After you claim the device and set up your account, change the Wi-Fi password at your house. If the previous owner knows your network password, they could potentially reconnect to your network and reach other smart devices. It's an extra step, but worth doing.

Same goes for smart locks, garage door openers with app connectivity, and any security system that runs through a hub. Check each one. If it was there when you moved in, treat it like it's compromised until you've reset it yourself.
