Smart Bulbs vs. Smart Switches: Which Should You Use?

This is the first decision and it depends on your setup.

Smart bulbs replace the bulb itself. The switch stays dumb. You control the bulb through an app or voice. The problem: if someone flips the wall switch off, the bulb loses power and stops being "smart" until the switch is flipped back on. This frustrates people who share a home.

Smart switches replace the wall switch. The bulbs are regular dumb bulbs. The switch handles all the intelligence. Anyone can use the switch normally and you can still use the app or voice. The downside: installation involves wiring, and you need a neutral wire in your switch box (older homes sometimes don't have one).

General rule:

• Renters or people who don't want to touch wiring: smart bulbs
• Homeowners with families who use the physical switch: smart switches
• Single-room setups like a bedside lamp: smart bulbs

Hub vs. No Hub

Some smart light systems require a hub (a small device that plugs into your router). Others connect directly to Wi-Fi without one.

Hub-based systems (Philips Hue): More reliable, faster response, works even if the internet goes down. The hub adds $60-70 upfront. Better for large setups.

No-hub systems (LIFX, Kasa, Govee): Each bulb connects directly to Wi-Fi. Simpler to start. Can slow down your Wi-Fi if you have dozens of bulbs. Works fine for small setups.

The Dimmer Compatibility Warning

If you have dimmer switches in your home, read this carefully.

Most smart bulbs are not compatible with traditional dimmer switches. Connecting a smart bulb to a dimmer can cause flickering, buzzing, or shortened bulb life. Before installing smart bulbs, either:

1. Replace dimmer switches with regular on/off switches
2. Buy smart bulbs specifically rated as dimmer-compatible (check the manufacturer's spec sheet)
3. Replace the dimmer with a smart dimmer switch designed for smart bulbs

Setting Up Room by Room

Start with the room you use most. Usually the living room or bedroom. Don't try to do the whole house at once.

2. Turn the switch on
3. Open the manufacturer's app (Hue, LIFX, Kasa) and follow the setup wizard
4. Name the light and assign it to a room

For smart switches:

1. Turn off the circuit breaker for that room

Which Brand to Choose

Philips Hue: The gold standard. Expensive but the most reliable, best color accuracy, widest accessory ecosystem. Requires the Hue Bridge hub.

LIFX: No hub needed, excellent color and brightness. More expensive per bulb than Hue. Best for small setups.

Kasa (TP-Link): Budget-friendly, reliable, no hub needed. Works well with Alexa and Google Home. Limited color options on lower-end models.

Govee: Cheapest option. Fine for ambient lighting like light strips behind a TV. Not as reliable as the above for primary room lighting.

Voice Control Setup

Once your bulbs or switches are in the manufacturer's app, add them to whatever voice platform you use:

• Amazon Alexa: Say "Alexa, discover devices" or add through the Alexa app's Devices section
• Google Home: Tap + in the app, select Set Up Device, then Works with Google
• Apple Home: Scan the HomeKit code on the box (only works with HomeKit-compatible devices)

After setup, you can say "turn off the bedroom lights" or create automations like "turn on the porch light at sunset."
