Here's how to reset every connected device before you move in." date: "2026-06-16" keywords: ["smart home security", "new home smart devices", "factory reset smart home", "Ring camera previous owner", "smart lock new house", "new homeowner tech checklist"]
You just got the keys. The sellers left behind a Ring doorbell, a Nest thermostat, and a smart lock on the front door. Saves you money, right? Maybe. But before you move your furniture in, there's something you need to deal with.
The previous owners might still have access to every one of those devices.
This is not a fringe scenario. It is how smart home tech works. When you buy a house, the physical property transfers. The digital accounts behind those devices do not. Ring, Nest, August, Ecobee, Arlo, Wyze: every one of these platforms stores access in cloud accounts. Factory resetting the device breaks that link. Not resetting it means the old owners could still be watching, adjusting, or unlocking from anywhere in the world.
Here is what you need to check and reset before you settle in.
Your Ring Doorbell
Ring cameras stay connected to whatever Amazon/Ring account set them up. If you did not factory reset the device and create your own account, the previous owner can still see your doorbell footage. Factory reset: hold the orange button on the back of the device for 15 seconds until the light spins. Then set it up fresh in the Ring app under your account.
Your Smart Locks
This one matters most. If there is a smart lock, the previous owner may have codes, app access, or the ability to generate new codes remotely. Check the brand (August, Schlage, Yale, Kwikset are common), find the factory reset instructions, and start from zero. Do not skip this.
Your Nest or Ecobee Thermostat
A thermostat sounds low-stakes. But it is connected to your Wi-Fi and potentially to a Google Home or Amazon account that is not yours. Reset it to factory defaults and re-add it to your own account. Both Nest and Ecobee have clear reset options in the device settings menu.
Your Smart Home Hub (If There Is One)
SmartThings, Google Home, Amazon Echo, Apple HomePad. These hubs can control everything in the house. If the previous owners did not remove the house from their hub account, they may still have control over any device paired to it. Factory reset every hub you find.
Arlo, Wyze, or Other Security Cameras
Indoor and outdoor cameras are the highest priority after smart locks. These have physical power sources and cloud storage. If the device was not reset, video may still be uploading to the old owner's cloud account. Factory reset before you put them back online.
Your Wi-Fi Router
The previous owners may know your network password, or the admin login for your router. Change the Wi-Fi password on day one. Better option: factory reset the router, generate a new admin password, and set up the network with your own credentials. If it is a leased router, contact your ISP.
The Full Reset Order
Work through this before you unpack a single box:
- Factory reset the Wi-Fi router first. This boots every device off the network.
- Reset smart locks. Change physical codes and revoke app access.
- Reset all cameras: Ring, Arlo, Wyze, Blink.
- Reset the thermostat: Nest, Ecobee, or whatever brand is installed.
- Reset any smart home hub.
- Go room by room and look for anything plugged in: smart plugs, smart bulbs, voice assistants. Reset those too.
- Create fresh accounts for every device under your own email address.
