Your Wi-Fi is fine in the living room. Walk into the bedroom or the backyard, and suddenly you're watching a video that won't stop buffering. You've heard about Wi-Fi extenders and mesh systems, but you're not sure which one solves the problem. Here's how they actually work and which one is worth buying.

What a Wi-Fi Extender Does

A Wi-Fi extender (also called a range extender or repeater) picks up your existing Wi-Fi signal and rebroadcasts it. It doesn't create a new network. It copies and rebroadcasts your current one.

The tradeoff: you get coverage further into your home, but at reduced speeds. Mesh systems use a dedicated wireless backhaul, which is a separate radio channel that nodes use to talk to each other, so they don't sacrifice the bandwidth that gets sent to your devices. Some systems also offer wired backhaul, where you run Ethernet between nodes for even better performance.

Popular options include eero, Google Nest WiFi, and TP-Link Deco. A two-node system covers most 1,500 to 2,500 square foot homes. Expect to pay $150 to $350 for a quality setup.

The Real-World Difference

Here's a practical way to think about it: an extender patches a weak signal. A mesh system replaces it with a better one.

If you have one problem area in an otherwise solid network, an extender might be enough. If your router struggles to reach more than one room, or if you have a two-story home, thick walls, or a large floor plan, a mesh system is the more reliable fix.

The other factor is reliability over time. Extenders can lose connection to the main router and require manual reboots. Mesh nodes self-heal. If one loses connection, the others reroute automatically.

When to Skip Both and Call a Tech

Sometimes the problem isn't signal reach at all. It's a router placement issue, an old router running outdated firmware, or an ISP bottleneck that no amount of hardware will fix.
